Marcus had to write a short report on a famous Canadian for his Co-Op social studies class. We have only done one or 2 reports in the past, so this was new to him. He worked very independently and enjoyed the research and outline process. I have to say that I'm not completely familiar with a standard report form, so he was had no guidance and it might even be all wrong? Report forms are not found in the Gr. 4 LA materials I use. I guess I need to look into that!
Chris Hadfield
Chris Hadfield is a famous Canadian who was the commander of the International Space Station for half a year! He was also the first Canadian to do a spacewalk.
He was born August 29, 1959 and grew up on a corn farm in Southern Ontario. As a kid, he was inspired to become an astronaut after watching the Apollo 11 land on the moon in April of 1969. He started to make cardboard space shuttles and tried to throw them as high as he could, hoping to reach the moon. Of course, he was unsuccessful, but this did not stop him. When he started school, he got test scores as high as the stars a received various scholarships. He started working as a Royal Canadian Air Force test pilot where he flew many experimental planes. He was also a mechanical engineer and an expert on aviation systems.
He greatly enjoyed his hobbies of skiing, guitar, singing, writing, running, horse-riding, volleyball, and squash. However, when he got a call from NASA inviting him to take part in training, he could not refuse. The basic skills he needed to learn included: history of space flights, life science, earth observation, astronomy, robotics, behaviour and performance, flight training, parachute jumps, SCUBA diving, first aid, language training, public speaking, and survival training (summer and winter.) Phew! That must have kept him busy! It might seem like extremely hard work, but for some people like Chris, it’s exactly what they want to do.
In March of 2013 he became the commander of the International Space Station where he installed a new robot arm called the Canadarm2. He also ran dozens of experiments involving low gravity impact on human biology. He safely returned to earth on May 12, 2013 aboard a Soyuz spacecraft after releasing his version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” This youtube video received over 22 million views and made him famous all over the world. He has since retired as an astronaut and now spends his time as an university professor, writer and musician.
Will your determination and passion take you this far?
