Her task was to write a short fable with "Self conceit may lead to self destruction" as the moral. This started out as a writing task for Marcus, but she was keen to do her own. I took the time to introduce some if the IEW's "Dress-ups" to her. She worked independently and enjoyed typing it as opposed to writing it by hand. I still have to figure out how much I'll let the kids type their work. I think their attention to detail is much better when handwritten.
The Disobeying Bluejay.
Once there was a puny bluejay, who was very boastful. He challenged his friends to dash through the thickest rosebush. None of the clever chicks knew that behind the bush lived a fierce lion, who heard the bluejay’s challenge. The lion decided to wait, because he was starving. So one day, the bluejay decided to prove how brave he was. He dashed it through the bush! Meanwhile, the starving lion got ready to pounce. Suddenly, the bluejay’s friends screeched, “Look out!” The bluejay tumbled back into the bush just in time. He never boasted again and the lion remained hungry.
Moral: Self conceit may lead to self destruction.
