Claudius Ptolemy
Ptolemy was born in Egypt about 90 years after Jesus was born. He made many discoveries in astronomy, geography and mathematics. He was also a poet and wrote many books that where considered true and accurate for a long time.
He believed that the earth was round, but that it was the centre of the universe and that everything else in the sky revolved around the earth. He recorder over 1000 stars in the sky, 300 of which he discovered himself.
He came up with the idea of using latitude and longitude in creating maps. His maps were very inaccurate, but until Columbus and others sailed all over the world, it was the best the people of the time had available. He believed the earth to only be about half as big as it really is.
Ptolemy died in 168 AD, but is still respected for his contributions to science.
